Not quite half. With the equipment specified for VW Audi dealers, all four
wheels must be measured. The front alignment is partially based upon the
thrust angle, which is measured from the rear wheels. True, the front wheel
drive cars that have rear swing axles don't have all the handy eccentric
adjusters that the multilink rear ends do, but the bushing brackets for the
swing axle have slotted mounting holes, allowing slight adjustment of
thrust angle, and it can be an iron plated bitch to adjust them.
Fortunately, they rarely need adjustment.
Anyway, the mechanic still needs to get the job, go out in the lot and find
the car, put it up on the alignment rack, measure all four wheels, and then
generally only the front end has to be adjusted. Then all the equipment has
to be put away, car put back out in the lot, paperwork done... that's not
half the work.
