Horsepokey. A friend with a brand new 2004.5 Passat GLS 1.8T
5 sp 4 motion has verified (on paper) from VWoA that he can
do his own oil changes. Just keep receipts of the oil + filter
and dates of the job. Due to his commute (3.5 hrs/day all open
road) he's already up to his 12.5 k mile checkup and he has had
ABSOLUTELY no problems with the 1.8T (weird speaker buzzes in the CD
player(s) mode when cold only, radio's fine, what's with THAT!)
otherwise a perfectly fine car, properly maintained, nothing
excessive done to take care of it. I'd bet most of the sludging
is due to neglect. As I said earlier, the 1.8T isn't dead, dropped
or booted, it's been enlarged and has gotten direct injection,
which has nothing to do with it's lube system issues. Yeah, they
did drop the turbo, but that's more likely an emissions thing
(harder to control combustion from that standpoint due to higher
temps/NOx). The 1.8T's that have gone BOOM sound like they've been
"worked" from the type of cars that they're in and the fact that
most complaints are people on lists/sites (yeah, possibly a big generallization but heck, that's why most of us are on these things), and that's NOT VW/Audi's fault.

actually if you change your own oil it voids the warranty..VW dealers need to
see proof of oil changes now on the 1.8T's because they have had so many
engine/turbo replacent claims.
