With ANY turbocharged car, you have to be very careful about maintenance.

The 1.8T engines are no exception. I don't think it is hard to find a
well-maintained car at all- you just need to see who owned the car,
look at maintenance records, look at the condition of the car, etc.
I'm sure the current owner of our A4 is very happy, getting a
well-maintained car for a very good price.

If you're that worried, then don't get one. The 2.8L V-6 cars have
their own set of issues. In terms of reliability, VW/Audi is not in
the same class as something as boring as a Toyota Camry. If I were
truly that concerned, I wouldn't get one- I'd get a Camry, Accord or
something else that can withstand more neglect.
