speaking of 1.8 sludge and junk

My son just bought a 01 A4 1.8tq with 62k and I am going to teach him how to change the oil.
Since this car is suspect to the sludge problem I was wondering if there is a treatment that could be given to the engine prior to the change. I will be putting Mobil 1 in it but I am still confused as to which filter to use. Shopping the parts sites I seem to find conflicting numbers. I am assuming Bosch or Mann but which one?
Thanks for any assistance on this. I would like to see him pointed in the right direction.
