I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but it sounds to me like you're
going to drop the oil pan and look inside to see what's scraping in there.
This is not normal at all, something is wrong. I do like the idea of
pulling the plugs and turning the engine by hand with someone listening at
the bell housing/flywheel area to try to localize the noise, but (and no
pun intended) I don't like the sound of this.
One good thing, however, if there was an assembly error and the engine had
started, whatever damage you do find would have been much more extensive
and expensive.
