I have only taken one V8 apart but the severely 'hammered up' ring groves
suggest that the pistons are soft. Definately forged but still soft. I
consider them to be under par for a turbo build. The piston crown is pretty
thin too, my quick measurements gave me 9mm. But since something is wrong
with me I'm gathering parts to turbocharge the the ABZ in my 80Q next
winter. I also have a PT for painful turbo experiments, a guy gave it to me
if I promised to help him with the electrics in his car. I will regret that.

The bellhousings aren't the same on many of the VAG engines, but most of the
time there is enough matching holes to make it fit.

One pitfall is that the crank in the V8 is pushed further back compared to
the bellhousing flange, that makes the clutch sit closer to the
transmission. That makes it hard to fit the throw-out mechanism on some
transmissions.
