Here in urban areas of MA they used to have "self serve" baskets where
you just threw in the correct change and a light would turn green. Some
even had a piece of board (VERY soft pine) that would go up after you
tossed in your toll. I'd always throw whatever was handy in the general
direction of the basket and drive off, usually with little more than a
buzzer of bell going off. One day a State Trooper just happened to be on
the other side of the toll booth (I didn't notice him.) I told him I
threw in the correct change, we walked back to the toll booth, and there
on the floor was about $4.00 in change (lots of people miss.) On my way.
If you sat at the automatic toll booth and honked your horn, one of the
toll collectors would just push a button and let you right through.
The baskets have been gone now for a few months, the biggest losers are
going to be the motorcycle riders, all you ever had to do on a bike was
bend over, pick up someone elses missed toss and be on your way.
