Thanks for all of your suggestions.  I discovered that the connection on the rear of the fan did have slight corrosion on it, and when wiggling it the fan did come on when the engine was hot.  Cleaned it with battery cleaner and put terminal protector on it. Also changed the relays around the fuse box.  
Result, the fan comes on at regular intervals as needed and the temperature gage has dropped back to normal.
 
I had clutch problems too.  I bought a rebuild kit from Kragens for under $50.00 for both the ends.  Looked at the problem of removing the slave and decided to fix the pedel end only.  I let the air bubbles rise back to the overflow tank and have not had a problem.
