Intercooler fitment, etc. on possible turbo conversion

I may have another project thrust on me - this time someone who wants an "inexpensive" power upgrade for his near pristine '83 GT Coupe. I gave him the lowdown on the less expensive NG/NG conversions, which we know won't provide any drastic power increase, but would be a nice improvement over the stock system. My only issue here is whether or not to stick with stock CIS engine management, or to install one of the newer or something like Megasquirt.
Then I threw out the possibility of doing an MC conversion. I know this has been done many times, but am looking for caveats, or if it is doable with really not much trouble. I know I'd need to relocated the battery, and have recall of some tie-rod issue, but the biggest hurdle that may be a show-stopper is where/how to intall the intercooler? I don't think he would want to nix the AC.
I appreciate any information on BTDT costs - time and labor as well as lessons learned. I have the feeling this may be more than what he is willing to spend or for me to offer as an "inexpensive conversion", but would like to hear what those who have done similar Coupe or 4K conversions think. I'm not looking to do any flashy piping or for show - juust a bone stock MC conversion with a chip, maybe a tad P&P.
