even if you don't do that, the 85-87 calipers and 16 scirocco rotors 
will help up front.

The '83 also has a cable actuated clutch, so you'd have to add the 
hydraulics to run the later tranny.  The later tranny will get him lower 
gearing - an instant 15-20% jump in "apparent" power.
