The bellhousings are different.  So are the shift linkages.

Yes, VW/Audi have been pretty good at keeping things interchangeable,
as long as you stay within one engine family :).  Once you cross that
line then things aren't quite so.

I think a late '83 or '84 Coupe GT 093 trans still had the cable operated
clutch, but with the close ratio gears.  You might want to check on that
(I am not absolutely certain).
