new to Audi, new to the list

Hi Drew, and welcome to the club. I have dealt with both of the issues
you describe (on my 86 5000 TQ and my 88 5000 TQ Avant)

1) In my experience, the after run pump came on very frequently during
the summer. Anytime I drive long enough to get the engine up to normal
operating temp, the pump will come on after shutdown. In the winter, it
doesn't come on as much. I would not bother with a used one. The
problem with these pumps is that the nipples where the hoses connect are
plastic and over the years of heat cycling they become brittle and
break. Then you either get coolant all over the place and possibly bits
of plastic running through your cooling system which cannot be good for
your pump or coolant flow.

2) Ah, yes, the hydraulic pump and the requisite pentosin hydraulic
fluid.... My 86 came with the seive option on the hydraulic system. I
managed to stop the leaks for a while with some Can Tire mineral oil
transmission leak stopper. These systems are designed to use only
mineral hydraulic oil, which is very expensive and sometimes difficult
to obtain. Many listers, including myself, have done research on viable
options and you won't find 2 people who agree on the suitability of
these options. You should do a search of the archives and decide for
yourself. Whatever you do, don't post your opinion on the list or you
will start another war ...:) just kidding of course, civilized debate
is always good. I finally replaced my pump with the good one out of the
1984 5000 turbo that I parted out and I filled my system with automatic
transmission fluid. Did this over a year ago and the system is very dry
(outside). I don't necessarily recommend that you do this as I don't
know about the long term effects of using the tranny fluid. My research
convinced me that it was close enough to perform ok, but it may be
accelerating wear in the pump and rack. As I understand it, the pumps
can be rebuilt, but people have had mixed results according to posts on
the list. I think the most important thing is to make sure that your
car has the proper mineral hydraulic oil, and not generic 'power
steering fluid'.

Welcome to the club and hope you enjoy your car.

Oh, and by the way, if you hear from Tom Chudzinski, ignore him. He
lurks on the list and sends nasty, nasty emails to new posters when they
ask for help. I guess every family has it's black sheep....
