new to Audi, new to the list

Drew,
Welcome! If you don't already belong to the West-Toronto Audifans group on
Yahoo Groups - sign up! We're having the next pub night at the Clarkson
Pump in Mississauga next Thursday night.
1) the afterrun pump is mostly plastic - and plastic has a hard life under
the hood of our Audi Turbos. Here in Canada the part might be a bit hard to
find used - maybe somebody in W-TAF might have one. I picked a new one up
from my "parts source" in Buffalo - around U$100 if I remember correctly. I
know it's not in the circuit at the moment, but once you have fixed one
thing in a system (coolant, in this case), the next weak link will break
(probably the heater valve). BTDT - pump, then valve, then rad.....
2) the power steering pump is an enigma in these cars - my "parts source"
has said that he has had to warranty all of the rebuilds he has installed.
Aside from hose leaks, they can leak from the "X-caps", from the shaft seal,
or from the seam between the front and back halves. Rebuilding can fix it
temporarily, but they'll always restart leaking eventually IMHO. I had one
that actually leaked after re-sealing everything....I believe it was
actually leaking through the cast front part (hmmm...broken casting ~
crashed parts car?) Somewhere on the archives you can find a part number
for the reseal kit (there was one with a VW prefix if I'm not mistaken -
make sure you get one with a large o-ring for the mid-seam seal) - DIY for
these is not too hard if it's only the seam (check the halves for "flatness"
before you reassemble), slightly harder if it's the caps (I used a chisel
with the point ground flat and air wrench - repair went fast), and you'll
need a press if the shaft is leaking. It's very important to keep
everything as clean as possible when working on a DIY rebuild - no metal
filings and such. Don't reuse the fluid - you can get it at a discount from
the dealer if you provide your own container from their bulk supply.
Get to know some of your local wrecking yard guys - I have Mike's, Dominion
and B&D in the Hamilton area that I frequent (look to www.car-part.com to
find some locals). Being on a first name basis with them will garner some
great deals on used parts - like the $35 I paid for a ps pump a couple of
weeks ago when my ZF rebuild (bought used as well) started barfing fluid
from the shaft seal. It's good to have at least a couple spares of these on
hand.
E-mail me directly if you like - or c'mon down and join the flock that
appears in my driveway when I'm out working on my fleet (your car will
instinctively know the way).
Cheers!
