I am fed up!

While I agree that over modding a 1.8T can be diststerous, simple chipping should not be. The stock 150 HP 1.8T was boosted to .5 BAR, the 170/180 1.8T is boosted to .8 BAR. I ran a .9 BAR chip in my 98 Passat for about a year (giving around 190 HP) before upgrading to a 1.0 BAR chip that made around 205HP. I ran that chip for 40,000 miles with no problems other than a dead recirculation valve which was replaced by a nice Forge piston type valve. I sold it at 82,000 miels and jsut bumped into the new owner. It's now up to 139,000 miles and he has had NO repairs done. So that's almost 100,000 miles of chipped driving with no turbo or engine failure. I'd say if you don't go overbaord, you can pretty safely bump the boost on a 1.8T.

With the Audi turbo engines, the potential of BIG power increases
are there with chip mods and other tweaks. It's hard resist the
temptation when you can spend just a few hundred dollars and add
40-60hp and a similarly big boost in torque...

Of course with any such mods you reduce or remove the built-in safety
margins, and if not treated with care, component or engine failures
are quite conceivable. This is particularly true for the late model
Audis with their small K03 turbos. They are designed for quick spool-up
in low RPMs, but are not really suitable for big boosts.
