Right after I sent the previous message I stumbled upon this article:

I guess I was one year off, Gordon and crew were in the 2002 race, the 2003 USA team was Travis Pastrana (Moto-x), Casey Mears (NASCAR), and Boris Said (ALMS,Grand Am, other road racing).
