Geez, that's pretty brutal! Remind me to stay with my old cars... 
meanwhile, I feel for you guys!

Luckily European consumer protection is pretty good- even though the 
warranty expired years ago, if some important part fails, the consumer is 
entitled to at least a partial refund because you can expect said part to 
have a life expectancy of about XX years. That is, when the car is dealer 
maintained. And with the attitude of the Dutch Audi importer towards 
customer service, you'll need this kind of protection.
