Have him look at the VIN. The type is in there.
As far as those wheels, the first couple of digits *tend* to reflect the
first platform the part was designed for - for instance, the resistor
pack in my 89 90Q for the heater fan, an ancient VW part, starts with "191."

The type 81/85 thing is a bit weird, because they refer to cars built on
the same platform, basically. AFAIK, the only cars that are type 81 are
the early 4 cylinder 4000's. All coupe GTs are type 85, as are 4kqs and
UrQs.
Since the 4 cyl engine does involve differences in the front of the
frame, perhaps that is the distinction.
In the end, the VIN is the ultimate arbiter, regarding an individual car.
