You should be able to get a Gauge compatible with various kinds of
senders if you want to go the electrical route (egauges.com), these
sort of sites also have adapters for various threads.

No, the tiny volume used by the gauge makes no real difference.

For the LT-1Q I removed the AC vent "grills" and carefully modified them
to have a hole big enough to hold the gauge.  The center vent is where I
put a pressure gauge on the LT-1Q and a boost gauge on another Type 44. 
The result looks OK and you can angle the gauge for decent viewing.  If
you have blank switch spots in the center console some surgery will give
you a spot for a gauge (this is where the LT-1Q Oil Temp gauge sits...)
