Well, the screws and picks and teeth approach is the one I used here:

The crank seal came out in a *lot* of pieces, but it came out.

I think I may have used that ubiquitous brake tool of mine to help a 
bit, and probably broke a few detnal pick type tools.

I didn't scratch up the crank or oil pump housing *too* much in the process.

The actual tool is like a cylinder that slides over the crank stub and 
is threaded on the leading outside edge, and it cuts right into the seal 
witht hose threads so it can be pulled out.  Not very easy to make a 
"fake" one at home.

I think oce I had damaged the face of the seal enough, I was able to 
catch the "spring" that is inside it with a pick tool and start to tear 
it out.
