Yes.  You have to lock the motor from turning.  That bolt takes about 
330 ft-lb of torque, which is not something you want to try to hold 
against with the transmission and parking brake.

There is a proper tool for this that sits in the front of the crank 
pulley and locks against the front "snubber" engine mount thing.  There 
are also any number of shade tree methods, from packing a cylinder with 
rope to jamming the flywheel with a big screwdriver.  The proper tool 
makes it very easy, and is worth finding to borrow.  People have also 
made them out of a piece of pipe, a flat piece of steel and a bit of 
welding and cutting.
