Gas Cap Gone Bad Part deux

Sorry for the mispost under similar title.

My gas cap locking mechanism has failed on my 80q. 
The key will turn both directions but attempts to
unscrew it do not show any progress.

Has this happened to anyone or does anyone have
thoughts on how to get the cap off?  Locksmith? 
Destroy it and buy a new one?
