Fuel stavation hestitation rough running

Matt--I have limited, anecdotal input:  

My old mechanic used to loan me his '81 5k when he would have my coupe overnight.  I experienced fuel starvation at the worst possible time--getting on to I-95 from a curved onramp (during D.C. rush hour, no less).  His comment (after apologizing profusely for forgetting to tell me about it) was that this was common in the early 5k's, and if memory serves, he said it was due to the tank design.  I do remember very well that he said he always, *always* kept the tank at least 1/4 full.
