help! typ44: exhaust smell when heater is on

  At the risk of stating the obvious, you have an exhast leak.  The fact 
that you can only smell it when the heater is on implies it's relatively 
close to the head, so I'd start at the head and move downstream from there.  
If you can't hear/feel/find it by sticking your head (the one with your 
brain in it, not the one with your valves in it :) ) under the hood my 
favorite method is to take the probe out of a mechanics stethoscope (<$10 at 
sears) and replace it with a length of appropriately sized metal tube.  Get 
the tube close to the leak and you'll hear it plain as day.
