The heater box is sealed, there is an accordion hose that goes over to
the evaporator and fresh air intake. It's all located under the cowl
shroud. Take 2 minutes, remove the cowl cover and see if anything
strange is going on. While you're there clean out the leaves, acorns and
?? that's under there.
A few guesses, without looking at the car:
1. You have an oil leak which is burning off after a while and the fumes
are making their way into the cabin. "Oil" in this case covers hydraulic
fluid, brake fluid, coolant and motor oil. BTDT.
2. Might be the smell of burning coolant, could be bad heater core,
heater hose loose or leaking, or heater valve. BTDT
3. Your blower motor may be on it's way out, and what you're smelling is
smoke coming off the electricicles. A blower motor on it's way out will
smell like the protective coating burning off a new exhaust component.
BTDT
Cover you bases, take it to any of those franchise muffler places and
have the system inspected for free.
