'83 Coupe GT oil light problems - UPDATE

Ok, I changed the oil (10w40 semi synth) and filter on the weekend, and 
I also checked the ATF level, which was way down- it didn't even show 
up on the dipstick at all.

I thought I might have been measuring it wrong, but I rechecked my 
manual and it said it should be checked in neutral with the engine 
running- correct?

After toping that up so that it was just below the upper mark on the 
dipstick (I think I put about 500ml in), I took it for another drive. 
The oil light didn't go on solid as it did before, but I noticed it 
would flicker going down hill if I changed into 2nd manually, but not 
at any other time. Again, the pressure gauge stays constant.

Is it possible that the light is actually an ATF temperature / level 
warning light? It is just the red oil-can iconed light that is coming 
on.
