Regulator for the "Ultranator"

I have seen several different voltage regulators that will physically
replace a stock regulator for an Audi alternator but they had different part
numbers. On my 79 5000 (many years ago) I looked up the regulator by part
number and we did not have one. We did however have a regulator that looked
correct and I installed it and it worked. Of course it was a short term fix
because part problem was the worn out slip rings.
My point is that there are regulators that have the same or very similar
physical characteristics that have different electrical specifications for a
different application. Avi probably uses a regulator that is stock on a
different alternator and if you pulled the old one off and had a Bosch
retailer look up the part they can get you a new regulator. I am quite sure
Avi did not contract Bosch to manufacture custom voltage regulators for his
Ultranators.
Avi is probably on the road some where and will chime in when he returns and
we'll get the answer.
In the mean time Bret, you might want to pull the regulator and see if a
bush is stuck or there is some excess dirt on them. There are only 2 screws
that hold in the regulator once you can reach it. While you have it off
write down the part number and call around to a couple parts places and see
what you can find. I would be glad to run the part number thru Worldpacs
database if you e-mail it to me but I'll be a Thunderhill raceway all day
Saturday.
Good Luck
Jim
