Ah, I see- the side windows are tempered safety glass, and yes, 
they're designed to shatter into little bits.  This helps rescuers 
and the car radio black market ;-)

Used to be that windshield glass, when it was made of plate glass, 
would simply get punched out- say, by someone's head going through 
the windshield, making a hole with extremely sharp edges.  This would 
have extremely unfortunate consequences for someone not wearing a 
seatbelt, when the person's body ceased forward/upward movement and 
fell down/back into the car.  I believe the term was "the glass 
necklace of death".

Laminated safety glass was the solution to that- but I didn't realize 
the side windows were tempered, not laminated.  So...nevermind!  Back 
to your regularly scheduled program.
