engine dieing at idle (fuel pump?) '91 200 20v

Kneale,
I don't say that there's "squeaking" rubber. I just say that pliable
materials (like rubber, vinyl, urethane, spongy plastics) employed to
dampen noises do get harder over time and their noise suppression
caracteristics get worse. I don't have any example on an Audi fuel pump
but I do remember replacing time-hardened rubber transmission mounts on a
Ford, and it was like fitting another drivetrain. The noise level inside
the car was cut by half; however, the mounts themselves were stil lookin'
fine.

Where's the rubber in these mounts to cause squeaking? There used to be
rubbery mountings in the 5ktq tanks. The later models have plastic stuff
(kind of like stiff nylon). The way they snap together, there shouldn't
be
any rubbery rubbing.
Marvel Mystery Oil (which claims to be an injector lubricant when added to
fuel) helped quiet down my 200q20v pump for a while.
