That would be one of my guesses (the coil, not the audi tech). I have a 86' 4kq that had a problem with a melted ICM. I replaced it, the car was fine for a little while, then started acting up again.
Replaced the ICM again, same story. Would be good for a while, then act up.
After replacing the coil, the problem didn't return.
I'd also make _sure_ that your hall sender wiring is good- it can look fine, but not really be fine. If the plastic bracket that holds the connector to the distributor is broken, use a zip tie or some sort of method to secure it back on. The wires can be mostly broken inside the insulation, and lose continuity with movement.
