FWIW, Starters can usually be re-built a lot cheaper than buying a new
one. I took the starter from my ''87 5KTQ to a long time
starter/alternator shop in my area and they got me the new brush set
and also knew to check the ring gear (which is plastic). Sure enough,
it was cracked. They even put the parts in for free. Normally, they
would charge, but I think I must have seemed like someone in need (or
something). In most cases, alternators and starters have defects that
can be corrected by replacing easily obtained parts. So, I wouldn't
hesitate to recommend this route. If you can remove and re-install
yourself, you can save a bunch of $$.
