Persistent camshaft position sensor fault

I forgot to include that it's a 1.8T!
I have a '97 A4 with a '00 engine. I had a sudden loss in power, and then it died and would not re-start. I pulled codes with VAG-com and got "camshaft position sensor short to ground". I checked the wiring between the CPS and ECU and found no problems there, so I replaced the CPS. Same error code and still won't start. I again checked the wiring, checked that the CPS was making a signal with rotation, and checked the shutter wheel for proper alignment.
So, the next step according to Bentley is ECU replacement, but I want to make sure I've covered all possibilities before I do that. Also my current ECU has a stage 1 APR chip, and I don't want to give up that investment either (plus I don't think I could stand to drive without it!).
Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated!
