I don't know if this is applicable to your car but I found this Audi
Technical Service Bulletin on ALLDATA. It directs you to check the
crankshaft position sensor ring to see if it is loose before you test the
Camshaft Position Sensor.

Text from the Audi bulletin

Group: O1

Number: 97-03

Date: Feb. 24, 1997

Subject: Engine Cranks But Will Not Start, DTC 17746 (P1338) Stored in DTC

Condition; Engine cranks but will not start.

Prior to checking Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor -1- (G4O):

I forgot to include that it's a 1.8T!

I have a '97 A4 with a '00 engine. I had a sudden loss in power, and then
it died and would not re-start. I pulled codes with VAG-com and got
"camshaft position sensor short to ground". I checked the wiring between
the CPS and ECU and found no problems there, so I replaced the CPS. Same
error code and still won't start. I again checked the wiring, checked that
the CPS was making a signal with rotation, and checked the shutter wheel for
proper alignment.

So, the next step according to Bentley is ECU replacement, but I want to
make sure I've covered all possibilities before I do that. Also my current
ECU has a stage 1 APR chip, and I don't want to give up that investment
either (plus I don't think I could stand to drive without it!).

Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated!

John Rushing - Aspen, Colorado.
