Indeed,
At least on my '86 5KTQ you can still get the codes
even if the car won't start.
As long as you can get the car to crank, you should be
able to get the codes as Steve describes.
In the case of my 5K, it was two things preventing
from starting, a bad timing reference sensor located
on the housing bell and a totally mis-align dis.
