Super charger and turbo question

Over here in South Africa there's a Toyota Conquest with the 1.6L 16v
supercharged engine that Toyota used to make, all coupled with a
larg-ish turbocharger. The setup allows quite quick boost pickup from
the supercharger, and when the turbocharger comes into its own they
reckon the supercharger acts like a free-air pump. Kind of like the
boost pressure from the turbocharger forcing air through the
supercharger.

Why it's not common? I reckon cost, really. The guy who had this built
works out in Dubai 90% of the time. :P

What about looking at using something like the supercharger off of a
C32K AMG mercedes or something like that (230K, etc). Then again, those
things run 1 bar of boost, but they're running off a electronically
engaged clutch (it's on when you need it to be).

Just my thoughts. My technical knowledge behind it is non-existant. :)
I'd like a project like that, but heck I can't even find time to
assemble an MC engine. :(
