'95 A6 fwd auto trans - help please

I quizzed the local dealer about our 99 A6 Tiptronic, doing similar things.
They claimed it was for emissions.
If someone really knows the answer please tell us.

FYI:  If I drive (in Tip) I can shift sooner by several hundred RPM vs 
leaving the lever in Drive.  Ours does this since (new to us) around 50K.
