Gold in them thar coolant (NAC)

I am working on a new to me '94 Diesel Suburban.  I am a member of 
certain automotive forums for this product, but I rate the quattro list 
as far more knowledgable in the ways of cars.  When I drained the 
coolant out of the block of this relatively high milage engine it looked 
like there was gold flakes in it.  Is this just rust?  Is it some sort 
of stop leak or something?  The engine has two bad head gaskets which is 
why I am working on it, but I don't think that would matter.

Any thoughts?  I have never seen this when working on high mileage VAG 
product.

Sorry for the slight off topic, but I thought the collective knowledge 
might have some thoughts.
