John and others,
For those of you that suffer a personal injury and property loss due to the
law breaking or negligence of others, a must read is:
"How to win your personal injury claim" by John L. Matthews. Published by
Nolo Press.

This is often in your public library.

The book takes you through the step-by-step process of submitting claim and
negotiating a settlement. Even if you decide if to use a lawyer, reading the
book gives you the info you need to make sure the lawyer is doing the job
properly.

Patience is key. Settlement of property loss is quick. Compensation for
personal injury takes much longer. You want to heal completely before
negotiating a settlement.

I used the book when I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle, and was
quite happy with my settlement. I did not use a lawyer. Settlement on the
bike(custom made) took about a month. Settlement on the personal injury stuff took
18 months.

HTH.
