1.8T piston/valve interference

All,
I just got the head off the 1.8T this evening, and now have the pleasant
little chore of rebuilding it.  I wondered if anyone out there can offer
some advice in measuring the effects of the valve/piston interference.  ie:
how should I determine any damage to the top of the piston (if there is that
likelihood) from the timing belt being chewed by the crankshaft and the
resulting nightmare.
