Another fly in the ointment, possibly...
Was there not a different big end diameter between motors? Iirc when I
looked into fitting turbo pistons to my NA block there was an issue...... I
cannot remember the details.... I think erics aforementioned website has
more details.

Not correct. Your oil pan will fit fine. The only part I'm not 100%
sure on is if you need additional parts to be swapped from 20v to 10v,
such as the little plate that bolts to the very bottom of the block and
forms the lower half of the bell housing. I know for a fact others have
upgraded to the 20v pan on the 10v cars.

Referring to my favorite source for online data on VAG bottom ends:
http://not2fast.wryday.com/vw/stuff/vw_engines.shtml
The bore on the MC1 and MC2 are actually the same at 81mm, which matches
the bore of your 3B. Rod length is different between the two (136 for
the MC, 144 for the 3B IIRC). In other words, if you use an MC1/MC2
short block you can use the block and crank but will need to swap in
your 3B pistons, and a set of 144MM rods. Since you are down one, you
can probably use an equivalent rod from a different motor... you've got
LOTS of options here since there are a TON of vw and audi motors from
various years that use those same rods. Check the family album to
verify part numbers for a potential parts swap match.

cool, just let me know.
