Bad idea.  Use a new one.  As someone else mentioned, "jumping" the 
heater core hoses will at least keep the coolant in your engine and off 
your feet until you get one.  You won't have any heat or defrosting, though.

I was watching this being done next door.  The problem is once you've 
"exposed" the heater core, you can't lift it up because there is metal 
in the way, as I recall, and it also has to be pulled back from the 
firewall to clear the hose nipple things.

I *think* there were a total of four nuts to remove to free the housing, 
but a couple of them are hidden somewhere, like behind the battery or 
something like that.

You don't have to undo the A/C, there is enough play in the hoses to 
pull the housing back a few inches and make enough space to remove the 
core.  It also looked impossible to replace all the clips that held the 
housing together, since some are "blind."  Hard to remove, impossible to 
replace.  But there are enough all around it to hold it together.
