The purpose of putting the timing chain in the back on these V8 engines
is to make them shorter, so that the engine would fit in the small
engine bay of the B platform. By doing away with the timing belt,
and substituting a rear-mounted timing chain, they shortened the engine
by 2 inches.

On the A8, A6 4.2, S6 and RS6, etc., the V8 in there still has the
timing belt up front. There is no space issue on those cars.
