Well as those of you who have long, long attentions spans will remember,
I killed the engine in my 84 URQ last summer at the track. On
Thanksgiving we pulled the engine out to assess the damage and see about
rebuilding it. Along with everything else damaged on the engine
(connecting rod, oil pump, bearings) we had the head pressure tested and
true to form it had cracks in it. They may have been there all along,
we don't know, but suffice to say, it's not worth rebuilding. We
finally got the results of this pressure test a few weeks back and due
to family type emergencies (not AUDI family, actual people family) I've
been unable to even think about what the next step would be. Since it's
fairly late in the game to start an MC engine transplant (I'd like to
get Helmut back on the road in time for track events and don't have the
money to just throw cash at the problem) I started looking around for a
decent specimen of an WX engine. Keith Anderson found me a good one out
west for under a grand and it's on its way here right now.

It should be in place in plenty of time for the track season, with
enough grace period to tweak it. We are toying with putting a SAAB APC
controller in there which will give it some engine management and a bit
of extra boost as well. I know from reading the archives that it's been
done before, and it's a fairly common mod for Turbo Volvo's which have a
similar meltdown problem. So it looks like Helmut will be a transplant
patient afterall, taking on parts from another manufacturer. I may need
to redub him FrankenAudi.

I was interested to read the replies about Jean-Louis's post about the
Coupe GT gauges because that's another little project we're going to
since we have everything torn apart anyway.

Thanks for all your input and I may be tapping those of you who've come
forward and volunteered for help in the coming weeks.
