K&N filters bad?

Hi All,
I'm curious... Aside from overoiling a K&N then having MAF issues, has
anyone ever heard of an engine actually suffering more wear because of a
K&N? I sure haven't.
I know that foam filters aren't perfect either, especially on Webered cars.
I had a few small backfires through the carbs and later noticed that the
inside surface of the filter foam was a bit charred and bits of it were
likely getting ingested by the engine. Burnt foam won't hurt an engine, I'm
sure, but still, not ideal...
Anyways, to me it seems as if we're talking theoretically here. I bet all
filters effectively do almost the same job if they're in good condition, for
a street motor at least.

I have had good luck with UNI open-cell foam filters on motorcycles in
the past. Anything that can stop the dust kicked up by a dirt bike will
be more than enough for a car. If you read their FAQ, their bashing of
fabric filters is clearly taking aim at K&N. They do make 2.75-4"
