Broken A/C fitting

I don't see why a used one wouldn't 
work, except, as we both can see, the difficulty of getting to the part 

That's exactly why a new one might be worth not having to go through this hassle more times than I have to.  I'm going to cut the old line into little sections to remove.  I haven't looked closely, but is the fitting on the evaporator accessable through the passenger side foot well or does the whole evaporator need to be removed?
