Actually, they were made of silver (though I don't know what alloy)

Yup, silver melts lower than tin/lead, as I recall.  Any decent 
jewelsmith ought to be able to fix it nicely.

It was more like $30.  The guy disappeared after doing the deal, which 
was a pity, I wanted to get second one...
