removing rear center console

I have been trying to remove the rear center console in my 93 90csquattro so that I can then remove the front center console.  I have done everything according to the Bentley, however, the rear center console doesn't want to slide off over the emergency brake. Anyone have a trick or two that could help me get this darn piece off without breaking it?  I am trying to replace a central flap motor behind the dash but this step is stalling and frustrating me... any and all advice is appreciated.
