If your car is anything like my 89 90Q, this is a real pita. I've had
one off before, read the manual, and I still can't explain or understand it.

Basically, the fat plastic part, the handle, that the console won't
slide over, is keyed in place from underneath with a bendy piece of
plastic. You pry the key pin down, then fight with both sides of the
plastic to spread them and slide it all off.

And believe me, even with the information and description, it is still
difficult. You can't see what you're doing, you're applying all kinds
of awkward pressures, and doing it with three hands at once.

I have also been into the fore console a few times with the rear one
just jammed up out of the way, sort of. Bit of a battle, but easier
than getting that stupid handle cover off.
