There are two interesting wires from sw 1 to sw 2.  sw 2 passes them 
directly to the motor when it is in the "rest" position, allowing sw 1 
to control the motor.  There is also a boring wire, which is always 12 
volts at both switches.

When sw 1 is at rest, *both* of those two interesting wires are 
grounded.  sw 2 uses either one or the other for a ground, depending on 
which way you try to run the motor.

So my theory is that on your car, *one* of those two wires is broken, 
and the 12 v one is good.  So you can only run the window in one direction.

I'm not sure if this entirely makes sense, but basically, you do need to 
pull both rubber boots and take a look at the condition of the wires.

You would also be well advised to pull both interior door skins and 
examine everything, disconnect the battery ground strap and measure the 
wires' resistances, etc.
