Too rich 5kcstq after reassembly

Okey-dokey.
I'm trying to put the finishing touches on this already waaaaay too long
"fix everything" project on my '87 5000cs TQ:
    -Replaced injectors
-Removed and replaced all intake manifold gaskets
-Epoxied broken airbox, so hopefully it will seal now
-Replaced hydraulic lifters, timing belt, crank seal, cam seal,
water pump
    -Replaced radiator hoses and v-belts
    -Coolant flush
    -Oil change
-Cleaned ISV, throttle body, and all the oily goo off the front of
the engine that I could get to.

Once the intercooler was reconnected, I was able to start the car and
get it to rev, but it won't idle. I ran it for a couple of minutes and
noticed a black sooty spot on the concrete behind the tailpipe. It
wasn't running rich before I started this project.

As far as I can tell, I've got everything back together the way it
should be. I set the timing by putting a long socket extension in #1
cylinder and making sure it matched TDC as indicated by the balancer. I
set the timing belt sprocket mark to match the edge of the valve cover
as it says in Bentley.
I got the distributor housing aligned with the rotor mark while the
timing belt sprocket was still lined up. I can see the "0" lined up on
the flywheel.

So, when I put the cam back in yesterday, should I have mated the
distributer gear teeth to it in a specific way? I couldn't tell if
there was a preferred way of mating the cam gear and the distributer gear

Is there a specific amount of advance I should dial in to return it to
original specs?

Or should I be looking for something besides the timing, like a vacuum
leak perhaps?

Thanks a lot for the help guys. This list rocks.

-Barry
