Hi Steve, I did this not too long ago on my 88 5ktq avant.  I know
exactly the spot you are referring to and yes there are clips.  IIRC
they are spring steel that need to be pulled downwards and they do have
a small tab for grabbing onto.  Small hands and sturdy needlenose pliers
are the order of the day.  I guess you could remove the propshaft, but I
didn't go that far.

HTH and good luck.  I can't think of any other caveats to watch out for,
the rest is pretty straight forward.
